Comforters pulled up to the faces or kicked away. Legs peeking out; arms strewn around sometimes on top of each other. And a calm on the faces. The best part of the day is when I go to wake up the kids. I always sit down a couple of minutes and watch them in their sleep. They look so carefree, almost like angels when asleep (very different from how they behave when up and about :)). Then I call out their names. It is always Gautam, the younger one, who stirs first. He is an easy riser even on holidays. And, he gets up at 6.40 without a whimper most days.

Coco comes wagging his tail as soon as I call him. And he will go to both the boys trying to lick their faces that they expertly hide. Amid this tomfoolery, Gautam springs up and walks down to the dining room. And Siddharth gets up muttering about some more sleep and resolving to sleep a little earlier that night. Of course, a promise that is broken every single night.  The sleepy guys then get their hugs and kisses from mom. And Gautam begins his questions while brushing his teeth. They range from “Why petrol that burns in car engines to make it move does not burn the car down?” to Siddharth’s “Why are saturated fats bad for you and unsaturated fats good for you?” Ain’t I glad that I took science and was a good student  ;-).

I am the first one to wake up and I hate the alarm that goes off when it is almost dark. Trying to catch some last bits of sleep, I grudgingly get up. Coco is waiting with a warm welcome. His entire body seems to be dancing with his wagging tail. A beautiful sight to behold early in the morning. And then I take him out before picking up the newspapers, putting milk on the boil and get to cooking for the kids. This happens before I go to wake them up. And then they leave for school, waving and yelling, “Have a nice day! I love you, mom, dad!”

And that is how mornings begin in our home.

How do you begin your day?

I do the same Rachna! Sit and watch my daughter’s beautiful innocent face for a while before she wakes up and chaos ensues. She is not an easy child to wake but only on school days. On weekends when I want to sleep in a little she will be up before every one else. Gladly her school is at a stone’s throw so she doesn’t have to wake up at the crack of the dawn. It is a lovely picture you painted and probably is more or less the same in all households with kids. In our house we have buzo instead of Coco and after 10 years he has taken to wag his tail from his bed only. Ha! That dog is LAZZYYY. God bless you and your boys!!

Such a cute post, Rachna and one that brought a smile. Most of the days I just carry my son to the bathroom. He does not like to wake up early. So usually i try to wake him up by kissing, then tickling, then yelling and then finally picking him up 😛

How do you have the heart to wake them? I notice that they both sleep with their eyes partially open, like my niece does. 🙂
Our mornings would have been much lazier if our morning alarm service a.k.a. Pablo doesn’t work so well!

Very sweet post!! Sidharth and Gautam, both are very cute. Both of them have a striking resemblence. God bless them!! My grand daughters also make too much fuss about getting up on School days when their Mom tries to wake them. But if Elsa (our Dog) comes wagging her tail and starts licking their faces, they jump like a spring!!

Mine mornings go about the same routine, except that my daughter is not an easy riser, especially on wintery weekdays. I keep hopping between kitchen and her bed, but before I-love-u and and have-great-day hug, I usually get a frown with hate-you-mom tag.

How cute your story is. It just reminded me of how my mom used to wake me up years back. Till date I have this habit of saying “5 more minutes please” – earlier to mom, and now to hubby. Getting that extra minutes of sleep on the morning is a bliss. I roll over on the bed and get up at 6.30 when the husband had dutifully kept the rice cooker, and made boost drink for me. I wake up just because I need to make breakfast, and get ready to go to office. I am not a mornings person. And getting up anytime before 6.30 is the most difficult task for me.

A nice summary of how your day begins. Whenever, I have aerobics class, I keep my alarm for 5.30 am, I feel so sleepy, and wish I could sleep a little longer. However, Saturdays and Sundays are off, and I sleep till 7.30 am. Apart from the class there is no school or college rush for me, and my husband also works from the house, and he is an early riser, on all days. He would get up boil milk, put the coffee dicoction, have his coffee and go for his walk along with Bumnilli, who will be eagerly waiting.
Although our dog is so naughty , just looking at her innocent face makes me forget everything and give her a big hug and play ruff and tuff with her.
I am not a morning person at all, but all my life, I have had to get up early, even our college used to start at 6.15 am in summer, and 6,45 am in winter. So now whenever, there is no class I make use of the time sleeping late.
I used to wait for their school vacation, when they would also sleep late and I could sleep late.

Me too. I love to sleep till 7.30 on weekends. Hubby, he wakes up later than me. But on weekends, sometimes when he gets up early, he takes over the morning chores especially of brewing our cup of coffee. The only good part about school vacation is catching some extra sleep. But since both of us work from home, it is a challenge to keep them engaged.

Wow, the post simply talked about 30-45 minutes of your morning time, and it still felt so very substantial. This bought the memories of my childhood, when my mom used to do the same for my brother and me. And me being the eldest got up late just like Sidhhart here 🙂 It felt mundane then, but now when I am on my own, I miss those precious little moments spent on the breakfast table before school or during dinner. And you know what, even now I feel my mornings as mundane, but I only realise their importance when somedays I have to change the schedule.

Thank you Jenny. And I am sure they will miss it when they are grown up, and we will miss it when they are gone. And mundane is good. Like you pointed out, it hurts when the routine is disturbed mostly due to stressful events.
