Tick trouble!

A younger Coco!
My poor Coco is suffering from a huge tick infestation. Every time I leave him at the dog boarder’s, he tends to pick up some ticks invariably despite the tick treatment that we do before. And, this had happened a couple of months back as well. I had done his tick treatment and also regular brushing and killing of the offenders had immediately brought it under control. But a week back, the children noticed that Coco had a new kind of tick on his body very different from the usual dog ticks; they called it spider tick. This was an agile tick that is called “deer tick.” It is much more mobile and tends to spread and multiply rapidly in the surroundings. It even roams on surfaces and attaches quickly to any object. It seems to particularly like the ear and paw area of the dog. Each one of us in the house including my youngest son has turned into “tick-finding monkey!” Poor Coco, he is itching so much. And then, we noticed that one tick had attached itself to my youngest son’s tummy area. That was a scary sight and really alarmed us.
We took Coco to the vet. The vet gave him an anti-tick injection, and we have been asked to isolate Coco to one part of the house to prevent the infestation from spreading to the entire house. This has been especially painful to do. Coco who is used to being all around the place is now in one corner and cannot even sleep in his usual place. He gives us such sad looks and really makes us feel miserable. We all are feeling so sad for him, but we recognize the gravity of the situation and have no other option. Wishing for a speedy recovery for Coco and hoping that we get rid of all these disgusting creatures from our house :(.
Send your good wishes our way!

Rachna,This is really a big menace, specially in dogs with long coat. Not only injection but there are tick powders too which are useful. Do ask vet and use it as advised. Ticks need to be either burnt or drowned in Dettol treated water. Also be very cautious about tick fever as that is very dangerous. Hope Coco recovers soon and gets back to normal life full of love. They are just like family members. Our dog has to sleep on our bed. As soon as light is switched off, she jumps onto the bed and snuggles at my feet. Take care

awww…get rid of those ticks, coco.:((((((( Argh…ticks can be such a nuisance, Rachna. I understand. At one point I had five of dogs in my house. Avoid taking him to the lawn…because, that’s the place where ticks breed.Give him a nice pat from my side<3 All the best, coco..

Yes, we tried not taking him to our lawn. That did not seem to work either. We are going to get some pesticides to spray there. Thanks for your love to Coco!

So sorry to hear about this, Rachna. Have you taken up the matter with the present place you board him with? I’m not sure where you stay in Bangalore, but you need to look at another place to board him too. I’ve heard of a super place near the old airport – want me to find out more?

Thanks Corinne! I have a couple of dog boarders that are pretty reliable. This lady that I left him with boards them in her house and is very loving. In all probability, he picked up these ticks from the tall grass in our lawn :(. That is what the vet says. Thanks for your offer, but at the moment I am just going crazy trying to sanitize the house. It is so draining — physically and mentally. And, I feel so sorry for Cooc. Thanks for your concern dear.

Oh can empathise. Ticks have to be tackled on a war footing. That is another downside of leaving pets at the boarders. There are anti tick shampoos also available.Heres wishing a quick comeback to normalcy!

Yes, it is difficult to see him suffer. It is more difficult because we can’t tell him why we are doing certain things. First, he suffers the crawlies and then his interaction with the family is reduced too :(. Thank you for all the wishes.
