Akshaya Patra Foundation is an NGO (Non-government Organization) based in Bangalore, and is a non-profit organization. Despite all its economic prosperity in certain areas, India lags behind on many social parameters. One of them is child nutrition and nourishment. 42% of the Indian children under the age of 5 are underweight. Most children belonging to the economically backward background are foregoing schooling to supplement their family’s income. In this scenario, the mid-day meal scheme was introduced by the Government of India in the 1960’s. In 2003, after a Supreme Court directive asking the State Governments to implement this initiative, the Government of Karnataka initiated a mid-day meal program for all government-funded schools and invited partnership from NGOs to help with the effort.

Akshaya Patra Foundation which was started by ISKCON Bangalore, joined wholeheartedly in this effort. They provide 50% of the funds from their own pockets and the remaining are given by the government. In their state-of-the-art kitchens, they churn out wholesome, fresh cooked meals, hygienically prepared and transported to over 6500 schools across 7 Indian states and feeding around 1.25 million children everyday. Statistics prove that this wholesome meal has seen better enrollment and lesser dropouts in the schools concerned. Their aim is to feed 5 million children by the year 2020.

Akshaya Patra Foundation’s efforts were recently praised by the US President Barack Obama who highlighted the fact that a partnership of committed people is capable of working wonders. The Akshaya Patra Foundation is a wonderful organization, which is working towards the betterment of India’s children. They require donations to keep expanding and feeding more poor children. I contribute personally for this initiative regularly.

Good one. Promoted you on indivine. I like to correct that they are not providing money from their own pocket but collect money from individuals and organizations. commented on this line:”They provide 50% of the funds from their own pockets and the remaining are given by the government.”

@Holy Lama I have myself contributed to this cause and hope that more of us come forward to help out in this great cause. Thank you for the appreciation.@Satya Prakash Thank you Satya and welcome to my blog. Yes, you are right! When I said that 50% of the funds is contributed by them, I meant not personally but through donations and fund-raising exercises. Point noted!@Bikramjit One can’t blame you. You are not in India, so you might have missed on this organization’s efforts. But, there are so many articles like the one in Time, Wharton, Times of India where articles featuring them have appeared.

  31. […] Akshay Patra Foundation: They help in providing fresh hot mid-day meals to children in government schools across India. This initiative has single handedly kept many kids in school because for some of them, this is the only nutritious meal that they get in a day. And, no one can learn on an empty stomach. This initiative also hopes to address malnutrition that India battles on a huge level. I wrote about Akshay Patra earlier. Here is the link to my previous post. […]
