I was very keen to meet Gautam’s teacher this year and was eagerly awaiting the first PTI. Gautam, as was mentioned in an earlier post, was unable to even hold the pencil the entire last year in Pre Kg. I taught him how to hold pencil during the summer vacations, and he is now able to trace lines or join dots. But, I had a heart attack seeing the syllabus for LKG. They will be beginning cursive writing of small letters this year. I was anxious that he would feel that he is lagging behind.
He is an extremely shy guy and has large tears in his eyes if he feels that he is not able to do something properly. So, anyway that was the reason for my apprehension. I did not want to fight with his teacher to let him do his own thing and at his pace. I believe kindergarten is definitely not the time to put pressure on young kids.
But, I was pleasantly surprised to meet his teacher. She is warm and compassionate. She shares my thoughts about the partnership between the teacher and parents for the best development of the child. She has managed to get comfortable with Gautam within the month. He likes her a lot, always saying that she is loving and kind. She acknowledged that he would take a little more time than other kids to be better at writing, but she was not too concerned about it (refreshing change). She was very confident that she can handle him easily (he is very shy and finds it very hard to speak up). She is a trained teacher, and it showed in the approach in which she spoke to us.
Many parents have noticed that, of late, a lot of untrained teachers are getting into schools. It is generally believed that teaching is easy. How difficult is it to teach a young child English or Maths? But, teaching is much more about attitude and about understanding the child’s psychology. Teaching is about an understanding of how each child is different and how set expectations and paths do not work when teaching small kids.
I was pleasantly surprised to interact with her and very happy too. A mother cannot be happier if her child is happy, and Gautam seems to be happy.
