As I flip through the Sunday newspapers lazily, as I do every weekend, there seems to be nothing worthy of reading. All the pages are filled with either advertisements promoting a Valentine’s event or inane writeups about how to woo your Valentine, how to buy her the right gift? Really, give me a break! What happened to the notion of celebrating simple love? Do they understand that everything can not be measured by the value of gifts, especially not love. The kind of pressure which builds up on youngsters especially before Valentine’s Day is phenomenal. The guys are under pressure to find innovative, biggest, costliest gifts for their girlfriends. The girls, no matter what they say, always expect a gift :). Poor guy, it is really a sorry situation for him. And, then think of the poor singles who go deeper into depression every time someone asks them what they are doing on Valentine’s Day. Btw, why does no one expect a girl to gift the guy?
Have you seen how obscenely everything is priced on Valentine’s Day? It really is mindboggling commercialization of a cute concept. If you really must, buy your partner a gift, flowers, chocolates, or a dinner on a day before or after Valentine’s Day :). Practical, I’d say!
I am not opposed to Valentine’s Day, on the contrary, I am a sucker for anything love. I prefer the more real ways of showing your love — a note, a homemade lunch or dinner, and a good movie seen at home are perfectly acceptable ways, in my opinion, of celebrating. So, all the guys and gals out there, don’t get all taken in by the huge media hype. Celebrate your love in your unique way!
