What I meant was Hindi movie heroines. The other day watching Ms. Katrina Kaif for the promotion of a movie, I was struck by how little Hindi she knew. She still has a very discernible phirang accent and she is literally deadpan. She was doing great playing arm candy in movies with Akshay Kumar where she had no emoting to do. But with New York and Ajab Prem ki….. I was struck by how poor an actress she is. She looks great – very beautiful, wonderful figure but doesn’t one tire of it (maybe not the guys :)) and is it wrong to expect some meaty acting? And how does she manage to churn out hits despite such mediocre acting? Men, I guess who can’t get enough of her beauty? The same applies to Deepika. A beautiful woman, she has hardly 2-3 expressions she juggles with in each movie. Kareena who with her emaciated frame and bad features is not even beautiful but is a pretty good actress. She can carry off intense as well as inane roles with equal elan. I like Asin from the current breed who reminds me a lot of Sridevi with her histrionics. Priyanka Chopra is a good mix of beauty and acting. Can’t think of any more current ones.
My point is that in the show biz it is great to look good, dress well, dance well and groom oneself well. But can they work as hard on their acting abilities and put in some real effort to understand the language they are emoting in. Most of the Hindi film stars speak atrocious Hindi and actually take pride in their “toota-phoota” Hindi. I think actors have the longest innings as compared to just stars. Konkona would a good example of someone who captivates you with her acting. You even start finding her beautiful for her ordinary looks, the same earlier applied to Kajol. We need more of their breed in Bollywood today.
