The bond between a mother and child is very special. And, for me Mother’s Day holds a lot of significance. I became a mother for the first time on Mother’s Day, ten years ago, when my elder son, Siddharth, was born on the eve of Mother’s Day. The feeling of becoming a mother is so special and so powerful that no words can describe it. You feel this little life inside of you and wait in anticipation. You squeal with every kick, and you worry sick hoping your baby will be born healthy. You go through the travails of pregnancy, and it is crazy tough with all the nausea, discomfort et al. But, you forget all the pain and inconvenience when this little bundle of joy is given into your arms. And, you see this perfect creation of yours — the little helpless baby who looks at you with wide eyes and those fleeting smiles to lead his way into this unpredictable world. I remember the day crystal clear, as if it happened just yesterday.

Being my first born, Siddharth has always been very special to me. I see so much of myself in him, my own childhood struggles and my own qualities reflected in him. He is my sensitive son, very responsible, intelligent and trustworthy. There was an incident that happened a couple of years back when he really saved himself and his younger brother through his own gumption. I wouldn’t want to revisit that incident because it is truly painful. But, his father and I will always owe him a debt of gratitude for his presence of mind and quick memory. I love the openness that Sid and I share. As he grows older, he is becoming my friend. He discusses and shares things with me, and he cares for my opinion. I feel a special connect with him! From a carefree couple, we become parents. And, over umpteen feedings, diaper changes, waking up at night, helplessly putting him to bed and watching him get up just when you lie down, the deep bellied laughs and the baby gurgles, – life takes a turn towards an amazing journey of adventure, where we all grow and bond together as a family. At every juncture, it is so much fun to see this child of yours, who has so many of your and your husband’s physical and emotional qualities, evolve into an individual of his own. It is the biggest joy, which nature has given to parents to nurture, evolve and mold a life right from scratch. As parents, this special moment will always bind us together in a way very few other memories can. My husband has been with me every step of the way: holding my hand, wiping my tears when I was too tired or frustrated, and sharing the joys and sorrows of parenthood. We never had a nanny, and I really had no other support at home. I am pretty proud of my husband and I for doing it on our own.

Going through his pictures, I feel so overwhelmed that this chit of a boy, this tiny cherub, is now going to be all of 10 years old! He is just a few inches shorter than me and has a shoe size of 6 now :)!

Your mom and dad are proud of you, son. You bring immense joy and happiness to our lives. And, I hope that you always stay the wonderful human being that you already are. Wish you a very Happy Birthday on the 11th!

Tujhe suraj kahoon ya chanda, tujhe deep kahoon yaa tara,
mera naam karega roshan, jag mein mera raj dulaara!

The blog post I posted a couple of days back got deleted mysteriously. I copy pasted comments from a retrieved copy. Really weird!

JackMay 9, 2012 9:13 PMRachna,Certain feelings can only be understood when one experiences own self. Being mother is one of the top ones. Of course, being parents too. You brought back a lot of old memories. We too did not have a nanny. It was only when our both children were school going and big enough to take care, my wife took up job as teacher for tiny tots. Now we have fun in seeing grandchildren growing up. Your both children are almost same age as those of our daughter.Take careReplyDeleteReplies RachnaMay 10, 2012 11:16 AM Very true, Jack uncle. These special moments in life will stay with us forever. They are fulfilling and intensely satisfying. And, how nice that you could connect your own memories with mine. It is such an amazing experience to see a child come out of you and then grow into an adult. Delete

Meera SundararajanMay 10, 2012 3:24 PMHappy Mother’s Day and Happy Birthday to Siddharth- albeit belated. You are right – becoming a mother is very special. It is also very challenging. You are lucky to have your husband help you through it. Sometimes it feels like magic when we see that little bundle grow up – my daughter looks like me though her qualities are her father’s. I admire the way nature has brought these two together. Good bless Siddharth.ReplyDeleteReplies RachnaMay 10, 2012 4:38 PM Happy Mother’s Day to you too, and it is Siddharth’s birthday tomorrow. So, your wishes are in time. I know, I am lucky, and my husband chipped in all through. It does feel surreal that one is capable to giving life and then seeing them grow into flesh and blood. Yes, nature is amazing. Thank you for your kind words!

I think very few bonds are like the ones which connect one mother to another. You may be total strangers, but in each other’s experience and emotions you tend to find your own story – a few chapters or maybe the whole. This made me think of my own journey, up till now. Very beautiful, Rachna. Good to have spent a bit of my Saturday afternoon reading this. Forwarding it to my mother now. 🙂
