Okay, I was expecting this question to come from Siddharth and also have given a thought as to how to broach this with him. At his age of 7 years, I could not come up with any satisfactory answer. The topic of course is how are babies born?

This is how the conversation went the other day. We were watching TV the other day when Siddharth says

Sid: ” Mummy, I know you had me inside your tummy. But how did I get there.”

Me: ” Well, actually there is a process which happens before you are put there (trying to be as evasive!).”

Sid: ” What is that process?”

Me: ” A process has to be on.”

Sid: ” How come I did not notice when the process was being done in Gautam’s case?”

My ears were burning and it was hard to keep a straight face. Gurdev was pointedly ignoring us concentrating on his TV offering me no help :).

I had to end it with a lame, ” You will not understand just now. You will know when you are older.” He gave me an unbelieving, disappointing look but luckily ended my misery there.

Really, how does one broach this topic with one’s kids? Any pointers?

I was ROFL when I read the conversation you had with Sid. It only goes to show that when I watch I watch TV.

Absolutely hilarious!! I have to say I admire Sid in that he obviously noticed the delaying tactic :-)A colleague of mine has overly curious kids himself and got himself out of the situation by explaining: mommy and daddy each have half a baby seed. Daddy plants his half baby seed in mommy her tummy. Mommy then puts them together. He did mention that — thank god — his son did not ask about the details of planting baby seeds.

@Gurdev I know all about your single-minded focus for certain activities :).@Bart – Good answer but knowing Siddharth he would reach the details of planting pretty soon. Will give him this explanation the next time he asks. This will also take care of another query about how am I daddy’s son, I must be only yours? 🙂

@ Bhupesh Yes, we need a better answer than this one. My 7-year-old son would surely not buy the God giving in hospital theory :).
